I was with HdQt&BaseScSq,440thAirscgp,9thAAF. First base at Bournemouth,Eng,late Dec.’43,landed on Nornandy 6/11/44.I was a sheetmetal repairman. Repaired a great number of the P47’s.Admired the pilots, as well as a GREAT fighter. Was in a 5 man Mobile Repair unit that sometimes went to where our plane landed,because it was unable to return to base. Was at St.Dezier Fr. during Battle of the Bulge, then Leige,Belg. Transfered to Infantry April’45.I’ll never forget the P-47! To all the pilots, I Salute you!!!!!!!!

Have had the pleasure of corresponding with Walker (Bud) Mahurin who flew P-47’s in the 56th FG (63 FS). He has assisted me in the ultimate research into the death of my uncle, who was a Luftwaffe pilot. Mahurin shot down 3 German aircraft that day, as did Vance Ludwig.

They were a regular visitor around our aera as escorts of the bombers which visited, and were a welcomed sight, thanks Flyboys for your encouragement in those troubled times in a faraway land with difficult times and foreign language, and nothing to eat, amd plenty of work in those 14 hour days, and clubs an guns, swords to remind us, death was next door. Freedom was always in our mind and very few of us made it home,malaria finally took its toll on me and my weight dropped to 88lb at weighin at Palawan, PI 0n Sept 13,1945, after we were found 1/2 dead on that date. Why am I alive, I think I was kept alive to speak for those who, were killed for many reasons,starved,beaten to death, beheaded and all the other reasons only four of our Death Ten (Japs assigned to groups to kill when the time came )to impliment ’THE ORDER TO KILL’ came out alive. THANKS for the two Big bombs. Sorry I got started on this FREEDOM binge, by the way, Look out the windows this morn and listeten to the birds and you don’t see a Jap or gun in sight, and the air doesn’t smell of dead bodys, cordite, thats FREEDOM. Thanks for the space.

I am wondering whether anyone could perhaps steer me in the right direction - I am trying to find some photographs to use as scale documentation for a radio controlled P47D I am building. I am after photos of an 8th AF, 78th FG P47D ’razorback’, in D-Day invasion stripes. The 83rd squadron jug HL-O ’Lil Eva’ is the particular one I’m ideally after, but any other aircraft of similar markings would be considered. MX-W ’Miss Behave’ is the only one similar I’ve seen good photos of, but consequently has been modelled extensively; I’m hoping to come up with a different machine if possible. If anyone thinks they can be of any assistance I’d really appreciate it.

Trying to make contact with anyone who trained or flew with Wayne Leathers. He graduated class 43J from Aloe Field in Victoria, TX, November, 1943. After training, was stationed at Martlesham Heath in the UK from April ’44 until mid 1945. Was member of 356th FG, 360th Squadron under Col. Tukey. Flew P47’s and P51’s. Thanks.

Great site. Was a Spitfire squadron guy myself but have a great buddy who flew P47s, Bob O’Neill, shot down just after D-Day, evaded, and still larger than life in New Orleans.
