My father, who is 78 now, was an gunnery instructor and IP at Aloe Field in Victoria, Texas around 1944. He was a First. Lt. and flew the AT6 Texan , P-40 and P-47 at Aloe. He has no photos and remembers only a few names of fellow instructors and students. But has a really neat bunch of stories. Has a birthday soon and would really like to put him in contact with those guys back then. Does anyone recognize the name? Thanks, son Randy

I guess I rank in the Advocate category. Having grown up in the shadow of the P-47 and its pilots, I have always harbored a special and lasting love for the Jug. As a child I grew up near old Harding Field in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I hung around the flightline, watched them dogfight and chased crashes. Lately, I have published a 3-1/2-lb book, entitled HEROES OF HARDING FIELD, which focuses mainly on the training of P-47 pilots. Among the hundreds of vintage photos are the graduating classes of P-47 pilots. It was truly a labor of love. God bless America and P-47 pilots!

Very interesting web site. As a retired USAF fighter pilot I have always been interested in the ’Jug.’ Can someone point me to a book or documents that accurately record the combat record of the P-47 in WW II - especially as compared to the other great fighter of that day - the P-51? Both were great for different reasons, as I recall, but I would like to read an expert’s assessment of their respective attributes and combat performance. Thanks. Tom Goldman

I have an old B/W photo of a P-47D-10 s/n 42-75076. This plane was bought with the aid of students from the New Brunswick, NJ schools during WWll. I know, my family helped. On the side of the ship is written, ’Spirit of Roosevelt Junior High-School’ The helpful folks at Maxwell Field have researched that the plane was ent to ETO, Eighth AAF on 14 Sept 1943 arrived 17 Sept 1943. It was transferred to 9th AAF ETO on 13 Apr 1944. Does anyone know of any Squadron Associations, 8th or 9th AAF orgs where I can trace what Squadron this plane was assigned to. Any help would be appreciated. Bob Kalinak

I wrote P-47PILOTS The FIGHTER-BOMBER BOYS tO fill in the gap in WWII history. The P-47, and the pilots that flew that powerful war machine played a very important part in defeating Germany and saving many of our ground troops from death. Go to my website www.Thunderbolttom.com and find out more about us.

I am trying to respond to Philippe Canonne who requested information regarding the surrender of 18,000 German soldiers to the 36th FG. The e mail address he gave is incorrect. IF Philippe reads this please send me the correct address for a detailed response to the request. Charles Queen

We have been noticing requests from the aging uppy generation regarding their relatives who served in the AF during WWII and earlier. I know something about the 36th Fighter Group, Ninth AF. The 36th at one time or another was comprised of the 22nd,23rd,32nd and the 53rd squadrons. Between Tom Glenn (see elsewhere), myself and others we may be able to answer your questions.

Great website. If anyone reading this served with Flight Surgeon, Lt. Colonel Bernard Lowenstein (9th Air Force/27th Fighter Group)in a P-47 unit in Italy, Corsica, Southern France and Germany (1944-46), please e-mail me. Bernie is now 92 years old and in failing health. Nothing would give him greater pleasure than to hear from a former comrade. Thank you.

Hello, I am an avid amateur historian of WWII aviation and I am interested to see if I could attend the upcoming P-47 Pilots Assoc. Reunion in Savanah. I would also like to know if anyone has any info on the 201st FS. They were a Mexican Air Force unit that saw action in the Philipines towards the end of the war. I look foward to any responses. Thankyou

Wow! What a nice site. I wish there was such a group for old F4U Corsair pilots, of which I’m one. We flew with the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 up front turning a big fan, just like you guys! We also did fighter-bomber stuff, but then had to land back on our carrier -- which could be tricky with a nose 15 feet out ahead of us, coming around at 90 knots, peeking out the left side to see the Landing Signal Officer. My latest (seventh) book, ’Bent Wings - F4U Corsair Action & Accidents: True Tales of Trial & Terror!’ has 43 stories in its 376 pages, written by myself and nine other former Corsair pilots I know. Covers WWII, Korea, and peacetime. Shameless commercial at http://expage.com/page/bentwings. I LOVE comparing notes with old fighter pilots, and just had a long phone conversation with Tom Glenn about his book, ’P-47 Pilots - The Fighter Bomber Boys’ His website is http://thunderbolttom.com. I can be reached at (818)346-7024 most any day from 9AM-5PM Pacific Time...

My dad was a P-47 pilot during WWII - Roland W. Riddell (Bill). He died in February, 1999, but not before he was able to contact several of his fellow P-47 pilots, which was a joy to him. Your site is great. Keep it up, but please change his name (388th) from Ronald Riddell to Roland (correct name). My brother Jim directed me to this site. Thanks again.
